Preparing English Language Learners for an Interview

Overview

This lesson was created for a group of adult English language learners who come from various professions. Many of them expressed that they wanted to improve their English in order to find better jobs in the future. This lesson addresses the students’ need to learn domain-specific vocabulary which they can use outside of the classroom. It also provides a strategy to help them develop their interview skills.

After the implementation of this lesson, students were able to improve their oral competencies in English which were demonstrated during their mock interviews. They used the newly acquired vocabulary (taught at the beginning of the lesson) in their conversation. In addition, they were able to ask and answer questions that required higher-level thinking in English which they hadn’t done in class prior to this lesson.

Upon completing their end-of-course surveys, over 90% of the students stated that they were either satisfied or very satisfied with their learning experience. Also, over 75% of the students passed their final written exams.
